Pompeo Statement on Iran's Detention of Ten U.S. Sailors

Press Release

Date: Jan. 12, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) released the following statement on Iran's detention of ten U.S. Navy sailors and two ships:

"My thoughts and prayers are with the ten detained U.S. Navy sailors and their families. We must remain singularly focused on securing their immediate release. President Obama must not ignore this hostile act and should update Americans in his State of the Union address tonight.

The Iranians cannot detain any American--whether for one night or four years. The regime must let our sailors and all unlawfully held Americans free now. Lifting sanctions while Americans are still held hostage is totally unacceptable.

This is the latest in a long line of provocative and dangerous actions by Iran. Emboldened by President Obama's nuclear deal, this radical regime continues to test missiles in violation of a United Nations Resolution, fire rockets near U.S. ships, arrest and illegally detain American citizens, and support terrorism. For these sailors and the other American hostages, it is time we deal with the regime from a position of strength, not weakness."
